Lorick S/S 2010 Presentation

Due to the weather a last minute change to the Tribeca Grand Hotel didn't stop the crowd from viewing Abigial Lorick's collection. Three Mediums the theme of the presentation with an artist there painting the girls on a portait as they posed for the fashionista crowd. There were three sittings titled, The Watercolor, The Pastel and The Acrylic. I really enjoyed the abstract prints that was used throughout the collection or the various sittings to the pencil skirts to the full skirts mixing with crop jackets to tailored shirts the whole portait was absolutely feminine.

Alexander Michael Snyder S/S 2010 Fashion Show

Frida Kahlo's presence was definitely felt at Alexander Michael Snyder's debut show as the models graced the yellow catwalk showing off his spring 2010 collection. Inspired by the Mexican artist, the textures were impressive, the colors were dramatic, and the looks were polished and mature. The runway was filled with high collars, big shoulders, girly yet sophisticated lace, and bright teal and yellow leggings. Sheer materials and skinny belts made the collection sexy and modern, as well as traditional with a matronly feel. With romantic flowers wrapped into loose braids, the show took on a renaissance-like feel. Snyder may just be on to something here and we can't wait to try it out come spring. From the look on the faces of the designer's close friends in the audience, he did them proud. Job well done.

On Radar: Banana Republic's New Look

With the help of its newly appointed creative director, Simon Kneen, Banana Republic has thrown out its buttoned up style for a cool, modern look. “The structure [of the clothes] was looking a bit dated,” Kneen said. “We’re trying to get things loosened up.” His debut Spring collection for the retailer is filled with sustainable fabrics and fashion-forward silhouettes — we love it all.

The collection boasts Keen's view on Banana's classic staples. Trench coats have been updated in silky fabrics while dresses stay loose and fluid. The color palette has been revamped with light hues of khaki, slate gray, ivory, and white. What a refreshing way to look at Spring. What say you?

Rei Kawakubo takes on the masses at H&M

What: Comme des Garcons for H&M is set to be released worldwide on November 13th and with less than one month to go we can barely contain our excitement.

Why: One of the most influential and conceptual labels of our time, Comme des Garcons was established in 1969 and is often referenced in the designs of other great names. Marc Jacobs admitted: “I have never insisted on my own creativity, as Chanel would say…everyone is influenced by Comme des Garcons…”

Memorable for her extravagant, visionary efforts, it is perhaps a concern for regular H&M shoppers as to what sort of pieces could be imagined by Kawakubo for this collaboration. Kawakubo afterall, challenges the concept of fashion as the mainstream recognises, ultimately creating some fascinating, yet unflattering designs. It is worth acknowledging in this time of doubt then, the successful efforts of previous H& M collaborators Viktor and Rolf, who are also known for their artistic, referential presentations and have even pointed to their unhappiness with mainstream fashion in their creations.
What Viktor and Rolf do, I believe Comme des Garcons has only done better. The 30-piece collection is a wearable range which exposes some typical Comme de Garcon attributes: dark shades, uneven lines and polka dots.

London Fashion Week: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Even standing in the queue for this show was an event; it was a who’s who of celebsville, from Pamela Anderson to Mischa Barton to Kate Moss to Erin O’Connor and Dita Von Teese, yes they were all there en masse. Oh, and I must add that Dita really is flawless.
So, on with the clothes and the curiously long catwalk (the models must have been exhausted). To say I was excited is an understatement but I am very pleased to report that the Grande Dame of fashion did not disappoint.

John Varvatos: Spring 2009

I will never get why collections are released that are out of sync with the season they are intended for, but I do like John Varvatos’ spring collection. I’ve seen similar pieces before, but the details draw me in. I love the cable knit cardigan with toggles and how the sleeves of the blazers are dual toned. I’ve also noticed that more and more designers are heading in the direction of Ann Demeulemeester and Rick Owens with sheer shirts and sweaters. I love what Rick and Ann do with sheer material, but I don’t know how I feel about every other designer now doing this as well.

Up until a couple of years ago, Essa was an enigma wrapped in a mysterious shroud of theories. The
rumour mill churned out copious amounts of presumptions on the Sharjah-based designer. Some speculated that he was a recluse, producing only a handful of ghutra-inspired garments for the select elite to don; some said that he was an eccentric, temperamental character who would make uncompromising commentsto the few who made the precarious trek to his Sharjah atelier; others protested at the steep prices placed on Essa attire, deducing that it was a demand imposed by the designer himself. Dubai’s chic and modish would gather at hip cafés and lounges and exchange their Essa wish-lists. The Indian-born designer made rare appearances in Dubai’s blossoming art and social circuits;even rarer was his media coverage at the height of Dubai’s then-emergent fashion and society magazines. Gossip aside, Essa provoked a whopping level of intrigue as the designer who created funk and style out of a traditional, Arabian fabric.

Having grown up in the UAE, it was a fateful high school encounter which set Essa’s sights on the fashion industry. “I really owe it to a classmate at the International School of Choueifat. When all the kids in my class were reading ‘Car’, ‘Driver’ and ‘CompuTech’, she handed me ‘Cosmopolitan’ and ‘Vogue’,” he notes. After arming himself with an undergraduate degree in economics and marketing from Cyprus College in Nicosia, Cyprus, stints with pattern-cutters in London and Paris beckoned. From working at a men’s clothing store in Dubai to costume-designing in Bollywood and, “Venturing nomadically in the Far East,” Essa returned to the UAE and worked with Dubai-based designer Aline Saad at her Kabale atelier.

In 2004, a Paris-based organisation launched a project that aimed to establish UAE designers internationally. Essa chose to incorporate traditional Arabian material - from Bedouin jewellery and thalli trimmings used for kaftans to the aghal...

It’s time to join the never ending discussion concerning models and their weight. Because I’m a fashion guru and into models some people think I am and advocate for tall and skinny women.

As a matter of fact I feel empathy for female models, especially those working for the high fashion designers. Not only are they facing tough competition in an industry were most careers are short, but they have to deal with the painful weight requirements.

The fashion industry doesn’t have any compassion and doesn’t shed a tear for anyone. It’s a very shallow and superstitious industry. Money and fashion is all that matters, and models are nothing but walking dolls. That’s why your agency won’t feel bad about telling you right up in the face that you need to need to loose 5-15kg. In some cases girls are even measured around the waist and thighs and told how many centimeters they need to slice of.

Since the majority of girls and women don’t like engaging exercising or engage in sports, they drastically cut their food intake in order to, in a short time frame, meet the weight requirements set by their reputable agency. And that’s the root of all anorexia and eating disorders. Understandably many girls are willing to go far to stay in the dreamy world of exclusive clothes, free champagne and plenty of attention.

A skinny body is the epitome. Tall 15-16 years old girls tend to be popular just because they have very small breast, slender face and haven’t fully developed into a woman. On the other hand all models don’t struggle to stay in the industry by maintaining and unhealthy diet. Some people have a very high metabolism and are generally skinny regardless of how much they eat.

Me for example, can eat what I want, how much I want and when ever I want without gaining any weight. I’m serious, I have never had to think about what I eat. Unfortunately that had a negative effect on my body building and sports career in football. In trying to gain weight I went to the gym regularly for 2 years, ate like crazy but only gained a few kilos every year, but I did get stronger though. Last year when didn’t have any more time to lift weights or play football..

As for women I like them slim with some meat and nice shapes. I have a few skinny colleagues and cuddling with them isn’t an erotic experience, too bony. What looks great on the catwalk isn't always as great in the real world. Sex appeal is important which is something that many models with beautiful faces lack. I’ve meet glamour models and they have amazing bodies minus the over sized breasts off course. Something between them and a high fashion runway models is perfection. What’s most important is that the body is dense enough to fill up a pair of slim jeans. The body below is a good example of a well crafted body. I love cooking and love eating food as well, therefore I like girl who aren’t afraid of enjoying food. Love and beauty comes from within, there is no point in looking like Nichole Richie if you don't feel good.

Bio: Born Marisa Bertetta in Santa Cruz, California, she was first "discovered" at age 16 walking through a San Francisco cafe by two Italian modeling agents. Marisa gained attention when she appeared in a 1997 issue of Perfect 10 magazine. The actress – wearing a bright pink strapless micro-minidress by Bradley Bayou and an elaborate diamond necklace – arrived at Teddy's lounge inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel just after 10 p.m. And her companion Ronson took the prom-theme seriously, dressed to the nines in black pants, a tuxedo shirt, bow tie and top hat with red trim.

Sisley’s autumn campaign is nothing out of the ordinary. Like the majority of their ads it triggers your hormones or testosterone and is a bit on the provocative side. The classic red does most of the magic and it’s a pity that barely any women wear red lipstick these days. If you ask me I find it very suitable as fall ad, fall is THE mating season of the year. The weather is grey, windy and rainy, which are the perfect conditions for inviting someone of the opposite gender to cozy movie night at your place.

The highlight in the campaign is the mature and confident woman in total command. I love women mentally powerful women who aren’t afraid of taking control. But I’m going to stop there since this blog doesn’t cover my explicit fantasies of erotic nature involving dominant women in their late 20s/early 30s.

SS08: Z Zegna Men's wear

This year I came a cross an Ermenegildo Zegna store for the first time and stepped inside but ended up leaving it after 2 minutes. First of all I didn’t like that the stores had no people in it, leaving me and my buddy with 5 store assistance with their eyes on us. Secondly the store wasn’t very much different from the typical well sorted men’s store selling suits, ties, shirts, cufflinks, belts and a few accessories. Lastly the prices were off the roof. When I flipped over a tag attached to shirt to find out the price I silently said “oh shit”, $450 for a plain white shirt is way out of my league. On the other hand I knew that Zegna was high quality Italian tailor and didn’t expect their prices to be on the low side.

It seems like Zegna don’t find their fine reputation to be enough for them. They want to be respected and looked up on like the Armani and Valentino. Therefore they launched a new sister brand a few years ago named Z Zegna which targets the fashion crowd rather than wealthy sugar daddies with a tooth for expensive suits.

The 2007 fall collection wasn’t an eye brow raiser and was almost a yawn. Z Zegna has taken a 180 degree turn with their 2008 SS collection which is radically different from what any of the other fashionable tailors have shown to the world. Surprisingly the brand exhibits their collections during women’s NY fashion week instead of during Milano’s fashion week, quite odd if you ask me.

I instantly feel in love when I saw the first outfits and it only got better and better as I scrolled down the computer screen and saw the rest of the outfits. This one is a home run and shows that Z Zegna in going in the right direction. Grace Jones is the name that can be used to describe the style of this collection. The style and execution is simple but yet bold and avantgarde. Z Zegna is one brand to look out for in the near future.

Barely any of my friends wear anything on their heads and these 70s inspired shots make me want to run to the nearest second hand store and buy a bandana. The last time I wore one was in 1996 when 2pac, Warren G and all the other cool rappers wore bandanas. Since I’m not an emo or undertaker I can do without the rings with skulls on but I could see myself wearing similar dark and evil looking accessories like the “$100 dollar a barrel” necklace.

When I sleep I wear a du-rag to protect my pillow from the oily products in my hair. Perhaps I should invest in a cool looking head scarf and walk around like a messiah and marijuana lobbyist? As a cream on top I’ll let you rest your eyes on these stunning outfits from an editorial in this month’s issue Nuovo. Don’t they make you want to bring the 70s back?? I love the colours, patterns, accessories and the makeup. Lively but glamorous!

Kick off time and first in line is Missioni which we relate for their notoriously colourful and geometric patterns. This time they have left much of their signature patterns behind the curtain and laid more emphasis on design.

Missioni has become the arch nemesis of Burberry. Both design houses design proper but very chic men’s wear for the modern 21th century man. This F/W collection doesn’t consist of is not the typically cocky bad boy type of outfits. It is a little puffy though, if you look at the upper part of the trousers which gradually become slimmer downwards. Many of them a little shimmery and with the beige background the collection give me some minor Burberry SS08 ultra sonic vibes. They are very attractive though and are similar in shape to the type of jeans I wear.

It’s tucking-in galore to say the least. The trousers have been accentuated by tucking in the upper wear. With 2-4 thick pieces tucked into the trousers there is no way that a 5 years old boy would want to wear many of the outfits. Everything from shirts and turtle necks to thick cardigans have been tucked in for the pleasure of preventing the models from freezing in this unusually warm winter.

Model of the month: Ryan Taylor

Yet another rising model from the country with a big red maple leaf on its flag. But this Canada’s human export is not a female but a 17 year old boy wonder by the name Ryan Tailor. His slightly pouting mouth, deep puppy eyes and school boy-ish hair gives off the next door look. And who doesn’t like the next door look? No body off course, which is why Ryan and his irresistibly cute face a runway favorite. That’s it with the cute adjectives since you’re all probably starting to think that I want to make out with him. Naturally I will never want to do such an out of character act, but I would like to play a few rounds of Halo 2 against him since he’s apparently a big fan of the game.

The barely-legal appearance has worked in his favor for runway and catalog jobs but it is a tad sissy, which is why Ryan has yet to score a big campaign for any of the masculine fashion houses. Potential male super model? Probably not, in 3 years cute swagger will be washed away and he won’t be able to compete against Italian models with long hair, dark eyes and exotic manifestation.

Yesterday all clocks were wined one hour into the future, and you all know what that means, bikini hunting season has officially begun. Maybe not for us guys but for them ladies who will be flicking through mail order catalogues in search of the perfect beach wear. In Brazil there are sunny days, bananas, peacocks and Jeisa Chiminazzo who is this month’s eye candy.

With a divine body, seductive face and adorable freckles Jeisa looks delicious as water melon during a hot and humid afternoon in the tropical jungles. Although making potatoes and meatballs for the elderly isn’t one of her hobbies, she is Solitaire addict and love playing it until exhaustion. The Brazilian swim suit wonder has her handful with fashion shows, spreads for Sport illustrated and a recent campaign for Karl Lagerfeld. Despite the cute and “barely legal” looks she’s actually a grown woman turning 23 this year.

Some times we want to dress fashionable but be comfortable at the same time, especially during days or occasions when mobility and nothing having to worry about out gear are important aspects. A common dilemma is when you want to wear sneakers…………………but don’t want to appear to wearing to be wearing sneakers. Walking in Stan Smiths, Air Force ones or Chuck tailor when everyone else are wearing formal shoes will make you look at lost as a camel standing amongst a group of giraffes.

What has emerged in Sweden during the latest years is what we can call “formal sneakers”. They have thinner sole and laces giving off a more refined and elegant appearance than the average sneakers people tend to stomp around in. As publication giants like Conde Nast introducing fashion and lifestyle magazines in emerging markets like China, India and South Africa nationally unknown designers get their chance to creep up on the international scene. Press in magazines like Vogue does generate high level of publicity for designers who name might never even reach beyond their country’s border.

Worth keeping an eye ball on from the Far East is SIEG, a Korean designer. Living in the world of fashion anonymous SIEG have expressed their disinterest for foreigner by design a website non-user friendly for anyone with Korean illiteracy. What makes a visit to their site even more annoying is the slow and sluggish speed. In other words dismay for anyone curious about their products.

Living in global isolation SIEG are apparently well informed about what we westerns are up to and have taken a taste of western fashion by hiring one of the biggest male models at the moment, Sean O’pry. That would be like a soccer team on Easter Island recruiting a top player like Andriy Shevchenko to play in their domestic league. What’s strangest in this secrecy is that their SIEG’s website isn’t even indexed on google.com or google.co.uk. They seem to want to retain all their attractive clothes for themselves which is ironic since their lovely creations look tailored to nicely blend in amongst western designs.

It’s a shame because the images in the look book are absolutely gorgeous. The clothes and scenery will make your left ear tingle if you are familiar with COS(Collection of Style) which is a fashion house owned by H&M designing clothes in the style. Despite the similarities in colour choice, product line and design philosophy, SIEG draws the longest straw in this duel. With a taste for simple lines and excellent fabric choices what’s sets SIEG apart from COS is the execution and presentation is utterly splendid. Everything look as tasteful and elegant as a violin or piano.

SS09: Burberry Prorsum Men

As one of the top three most anticipated shows, Burberry Prorsum always does a superb job as the ice breaker getting people warmed up and excited about fashion season. Delivering a show with trendy clothes and the most booked male models brining press and fans to orgasm there are very few reasons to despise the design house.

Although the collections delivered during the recent 4-5 season have been mouth watering eye candy, they have displayed a slight pattern of monotonousness. Looking at the collections from a technical point of view they have been near identical with minor differences such as color or theme. The resemblance between all the shows has been so strong that it has been impossible to mistake either of the shows for anything other than Burberry. Creating a strong brand identity is equally as important as designing something that consumers won’t expect in order to maintain a high level of interest in the brand.

Christopher Bailey is a smart design who has just as Barack Obama recognized that there is a need for change. Taking a bold 90 degree turn of creating a collection without one single.………..*make a guess*…………… trench coat, Bailey has finally left behind Burberry’s signature piece. This is turning point for the brand that shows the world that there is more to Burberry than just trench coats, which has been the most eminent piece in all their collections. Bailey has even gone as far as toning down the usually overly chic and bold appearance of his creations. With grunge flair the SS09 represents the back side of Burberry with pale colours that would fail to attract the attention of a 7 month old baby.

Promoting multi layering it’s safe to say that people in Barbados won’t be drinking pineapple cocktails wearing any similar outfits to these in 2009. Given how the unstable the British weather is this collection is targeted to people experiencing gray and non exotic summer weather. With coats and blazers sporting straight and simple lines the collection will attract the typical Raf Simons or Jill Sander customer appreciating discrete luxury.

- Slightly excessive use of blue in combination with gray.
- Wearing long cardigans reaching just below the bum, plus holding a murse under your armpit might pass you off as a cross dresser. On the border line of too much feminism.
- Will be too expensive for anyone not prepared to sell a kidney on ebay.

Grade: 8.5/10 Presenting us with a predictable but unexpectedly boring AW08 collection Bailey has jumped back on the horse. Showing a different Burberry the SS09 still has poise and desirability without the over exposed Burberry trench coat.
